From the sound of it, it's like the downhill question is from a beginner, and you guys' answer IMO is an overkill for this specific case, but information wise it's all good advice. From my own experience, if you are a beginner descender, the rule of thumb is don't go over too much above the fastest speed you can do on the flat, and better respect that speed limit road sign. When at speed, the handling characteristic of a bicycle is very different from low speed, you need learning. The visual information processing is very different too, you need learning. It's like when you first learn driving a car, when you on a freeway doing 80 the visual information is just so overwhelming, a beginner could only last 30 minutes before fatigue, while a seasoned driver could just relax and last for hours given the person doesn't fall asleep. You brain needs to train itself to process such information efficiently. Let's say if usually you only go 30 some kph, even the 40 kph is a lot of difference. So when you go on a downhill, just don't go over it too much. Another good reference is the speed limit on the road, usually that's conservative enough to guarantee your safety. Even though you have done all of this, the gravity dragging you down and the "can't stop" feeling will still be very scary. Plus when in situations like steep incline + U-turn you still have very good possibility to overshoot because it's very hard to judge the corner without experience. Even if you are experienced sometime you still makes mistakes on the unfamiliar new course. I know all of this may sound too simple and primitive to you guys, but for someone who is inexperienced, it's still better to start from somewhere conservative and safe. You can't go wrong with slow, but sometimes for real beginner, the question is, "how slow". And that's just my 0.02.

Bob Roll Is a scumbag. Greg is the benchmark of American Cycling and I believe he was clean. Winning the TDF with 30 pellets still lodged in his heart and lungs?? Thats the real comeback, not getting "C" cause you were putting D-ball on your corn flakes in high school. I was Cat 1 in my first season of racing in 1992. In 1994 I got a UCI Pro card. Had a nasty crash in June, rehabbed and had a good spring, and quit the toxic sport in May of 1995 for all the reasons that are only now being spoken of 30 years later...Not a very impressive group of young men involved in my generation, in fact characterless weasels. I was lucky to race one time near Greg (who was a hero to the entire generation) in 1994 in Atlanta. A completely uneventful experience race-wise having finished in a pack of 50 riders, but one I will remember... Maybe 2/3rds. through a 140 something mile race we both needed wheel changes and spent several miles chasing back on and trading pulls...Smooth as silk...gave me a little nod when we rejoined..made my prize-$$-less day worth a smile. I call bullshit on the "everyone was doing it" narrative. A few talented young pro riders just left the sport instead of lacking character. History is written by the "winners" and the misdirected narrative is then debated and justified. Drugs aren't the problem... characterless, back-stabbing weasels of men are and always have been. You should look up Greg Strock...USCF settled out of court with him but the case is a documented one. I heard there was some sort of gag-order/no speak clause. We never hung but have some mutual friends...He had character & is a Doc. in Indianapolis now.

As an amateur cyclist that started riding the year Greg had his comeback win in '89, his words always ring true. I often wondered back in the day how Indurain avoided scrutiny. And I feel like a dope now, pun intended, for always defending Armstrong as the most tested rider in history. I'm already sick of how his image rehab tour is being embraced.

Listening to Colin explain his thoughts on risk taking in regards to fatherhood (new father to a young son), to me, seems overly simplistic and narcissistic. A long explanation without being able to actually verbally commit to placing fatherhood above risk taking in his life. The missing point for Colin is risk assessment, with an educated assessment of his endeavors. Using analogies such as sitting on the couch watching Netflix or not driving to work, only shows me this is a guy who still has long way to go on the road to adult maturity. On the flip side, it does appear that subconsciously he may have adjusted his risk tolerance as the RAAM is a little less risky than a solo Antarctica traverse. maybe its just that he cannot bring himself to admit it...... yet.

Here’s an idea for a future edition: with all the data and anecdotal information about riders upping their carbohydrate intake to over 90 grams per hour, I tried to follow this precept on my longer rides, albeit at much lower consumption given my FTP and age (low and old). That said, I am also getting a lot of advice about insulin resistance and the possibility of developing Type 2 diabetes from stressing my insulin response. There are multiple MD’s online who say that any carbohydrate intake in excess of 75 grams per day is a serious precursor of future problems. I would love to hear a debate between these two dissonant attitudes towards carb consumption.

Lachlan Morton hasn’t killed the Spirit of Gravel, Lifetime Grand Prix has. The 1hr highlights coverage package is terrible. So hyped, so frustrating not to be able to watch more of the actual races, too much focus on the commentators and above all, too much focus on the elite top 10. ...The Spirit of Gravel is the 99% of participants who are not in the elite races. The coverage of Unbound should be 50/50 divided between the elite races and the general participants, to celebrate the true Spirit of Gravel ...which is participation. This is what Unbound is built on. The coverage should be less broken and more cohesive, showing more of the actual racing. The commentary is presented as if we have watched the whole race, when in reality we see only snippets inserted amidst commentator hype. Very disappointing coverage, especially given the whole race is filmed by vehicle and chopper. Currently the hype is more important than the actual overall event. This is what's killing the Spirit of Gravel, not the elite riders, who are all awesome. …But no more awesome than every other finisher, who is competing with themselves and enjoying being part of the Spirit of Gravel.

You two are naive beyond belief. What did Greg say? Power curve to rpm on the climb. Empirical science is there to prove doping evidentially. History is there to prove the probability. Just ask your namesake David Walsh and read L A Confidential. Pogacar is in my view a doper. I know the history of cycling well and it is synonymous with doping from strychnine to steroids to EPO and beyond.

What does Benji know? He never was doped to his gills in a brutal late summer La Vuelta to win it all at the ripe old age of 42, the perfect age to start winning Grand tours. Your point would be valid if these doped riders turned "expert analysis" men actually told the truth about what was going on when riders get back from a rest day and are suddenly the latest "miracle", full of new bags of blood and vials of EPO. Instead of just babbling on and on about putting rivals to the sword.

IF you decide to race AND you're at the pointy end vying for wins, then do what the pros do. I still wear mtn shoes, but there seems to be a trend for road pedals and shoes. You'll want to run lower pressures than you ever thought. There are a couple pressure calculators that work well, but you'll still need to experiment HTH
